While sifting through some papers and files yesterday, I came across some assignments from past students. The in-class assignments were written longhand…and they were a hot damn mess! You would swear 6-year olds wrote that stuff.
It’s not just them. It’s me too. My penmanship is noticeably sloppy during winter break. Why? Because I’m not writing in my planner, writing sticky notes, writing lecture notes, writing comments on assignments. Instead, I’m tweeting and texting and emailing.
Computers are ruining our penmanship. Yeah, I said it.
What’s so wrong with that? Typing is faster and “universally” legible. What is lost with the decline of penmanship?
Personality.
You can learn a lot about someone from their handwriting. In age when we’re all feeling like automaton consumerist cogs in a cosmic wheel, how do we keep our individuality? Maybe we should write more.
